How the ladder works.

Play when you want, against whoever you want in your division. Every match you finish earns points, and the ladder updates as soon as a score goes in.

01How points work

The short version
Show up and finish: +8. Win: +6 more. Plus points for games you take and for beating someone above you.

You never lose points. Losing still moves you forward, just less than winning.

+8
Finish the match

Every completed match, win or lose.

+6
Win the match

On top of the 8 for finishing.

+0–3
Games, set one

1 point for every 2 games you win in the set, up to 3 (6 games).

+0–3
Games, set two

Same as set one. Match-tiebreak points don’t count toward games.

+0–5
Upset bonus (winners only)

Beat someone ranked above you and earn 1 point for each spot between you, up to 5. Beat #3 when you’re #7 and that’s +4. Ranks are taken from the live ladder when the score is entered. New players have no rank until they finish their first match, so there’s no upset bonus in either direction until then.

Standings
  • The ladder is sorted by total points and updates the moment a score is entered.
  • Players with the same points share a rank. The one with more wins is listed first.
  • There’s no cap on matches. The more you play, the more you climb.

02Joining

Pick your division

Ladders are split into men’s and women’s singles at 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5+. You’ll play people in your own division.

Play at your level or above

You don’t need a USTA membership. If you do have a USTA rating, join at that level or higher, never lower.

Inaugural season

The first season is centered on Lake Norman and nearby towns: Mooresville, Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Denver and the surrounding area.

03Setting up matches

Anyone, anytime

Play as often as you like, against anyone in your division. You can accept or pass on any proposal, no questions asked. Players who don’t play don’t earn points, so they’ll slide down the ladder.

Proposals are commitments
  • Post a proposal with a day, time and court. When someone accepts it, the match is on.
  • Accepting a proposal means you’ll be there. The same goes for the player who posted it.
  • Changed your mind before anyone accepts? Cancel the proposal so nobody grabs it.
  • Already accepted? Message your opponent in the app right away. Don’t just disappear.
Courts and guest fees

You and your opponent agree on where to play. If you pick a club with a guest fee, say so up front in the proposal note or chat. A fee nobody mentioned in advance is on the host, not the guest.

04Match format

Two sets, then a tiebreak if needed

Matches are best of three: two regular sets with standard tiebreaks at 6–6. If you split sets, play a 10-point match tiebreak (first to 10, win by 2) instead of a third set.

Balls

Both players bring a new can. Open one. The winner keeps the unopened can, and the loser takes the used balls home.

Warm-up and start time

Be ready to play at the scheduled time. Keep the warm-up to about 10 minutes so the court time goes to the match.

05Entering scores

Enter it right after you play

Either player can enter the score in the app. It counts immediately, and both players’ points and the ladder update right away.

48 hours to contest

If your opponent entered the wrong score, contest it within 48 hours. The points come off the ladder until the organizer sorts it out, and the organizer’s call is final.

Enter real scores

Deliberately entering a false score can get you removed from the league.

06Cancellations & no-shows

Give as much notice as you can

Things come up. If you have to cancel, let your opponent know as early as possible (a day or two is ideal) so they have a chance to find another match. Then set up a new time right away.

Late cancellations

If you cancel less than 24 hours before the match, offer your opponent the win by forfeit. It’s their choice: if they find another match that day, they can let it go.

15-minute rule

More than 15 minutes late, or not there at all, is a forfeit. The player who showed up gets the win.

Recording a forfeit

Enter it as a 6–0, 6–0 win for the player who showed up.

07Weather & injuries

Rain, darkness or losing the court

If a match gets interrupted, note the exact score where you stopped and pick up from there as soon as you can. Don’t start over. Write the score down in the match chat so there’s no confusion later.

Retiring mid-match

If a player gets hurt and can’t finish, the other player is credited with all the remaining games needed to complete the match. Enter that completed score. It isn’t a forfeit, so the injured player still gets credit for the games they won.

08Sportsmanship

Play by The Code

USTA rules apply, including The Code for calling your own lines. When in doubt, give your opponent the benefit of it. This is supposed to be fun.

Keep contact info for tennis

Contact info and messages you get through the league are for setting up matches only. Don’t use them for anything else.

Zero tolerance for abuse

Harassment, hateful language and abusive behavior aren’t allowed. Report or block any player from their profile or a message. LadderLeague can remove anyone from the league for disruptive behavior. See the Terms of Use.
